Hempafire Optima 515 helps infrastructure projects reduce material consumption while ensuring certified fire performance, and, when necessary, lower the environmental impact associated with materials.
Key Information:
— Hempafire has launched Hempafire Optima 515, which, in accordance with BS 476 certification standards, can achieve a fire resistance rating of up to 150 minutes.
This new fire‑retardant coating is specifically designed to reduce the required dry film thickness of the associated steel components, thereby helping to minimize coating consumption while maintaining certified fire‑resistance performance.
This product is a water-based coating with an extremely low volatile organic compound (VOC) content and comes with a third-party‑verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
Hempafire Optima 515, the latest addition to Hempafire’s water-based fiber‑based passive fire‑protection coating series, has been launched by Hempafire Group. Designed specifically for civil infrastructure, this new product provides fire protection for indoor steel structures while helping customers reduce coating consumption and overall installation costs.
Hempafire Optima 515 provides protection for steel structures exposed to fiber‑type fire environments, with a fire‑resistance rating of up to 150 minutes. The product has been tested in accordance with BS 476 and is certified by the third‑party certification body ApplusFire.
Roger Soler, Product Manager for Fire‑Retardant Coatings at Hempel Group, stated: “ Passive fire protection has always prioritized safety, yet today’s projects also demand greater construction efficiency and reduced material consumption. With the launch of Hempafire Optima 515, we have further strengthened our portfolio of water-based fire‑protective coatings for the civil infrastructure sector, while helping customers meet certified fire‑protection requirements and improve on‑site construction productivity. ”
Hempafire Optima 515 is specifically designed for open‑section steel members with low to medium section factors, aiming to enhance construction efficiency and reduce costs—components that account for a significant share in steel structure fire‑protection projects. With its advanced fire‑protective performance, this product meets certified fire‑resistance requirements while reducing the required dry film thickness, thereby optimizing material usage and ensuring compliance with applicable standards.

To further enhance construction efficiency, Hempafire Optima 515 employs a formulation with a solids content of up to 75%. During application, each coat can readily achieve a dry film thickness of up to 1.5 mm and dries quickly, yielding a smooth, high‑quality coating surface. This feature enables most steel components to meet the required fire‑resistance rating with just two coats applied within a single work shift.
As a result, the construction process becomes faster and more efficient, reducing labor requirements, shortening project timelines, and minimizing downtime, while also lowering overall project costs and delivering greater value to both contractors and owners.
This new product launch also introduced the Hempafire Optima 510, a versatile solution specifically engineered to optimize performance for lightweight steel members. Together with the Hempafire Optima 515, it forms an even more comprehensive offering, enabling designers to select the appropriate fire‑protective coating for diverse steel‑member requirements within a single project.
Both coatings feature extremely low VOC content and emissions and have earned independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which provide transparent, verifiable environmental information. Subject to compliance with the specific requirements and assessment criteria of various green building rating systems, they can help project teams pursue relevant green building certifications. This product line is compatible with Hempel‑approved waterborne fire‑protective coating system primers and topcoats, enabling flexible configuration of a complete coating system tailored to project needs and aesthetic requirements.
Hempafire Optima 515 has already been launched in the Middle East. Over the coming months, Hempel plans to extend the product’s availability to other countries and regions that adhere to the BS 476 standard.
